Thomas R. Mather, MD
Co-Founder & Partner
Thomas R. Mather, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist, oculoplastic surgeon, entrepreneur and investor with more than 35 years of experience at the intersection of clinical ophthalmology and emerging medical technologies.
Throughout his career, Dr. Mather has worked with ophthalmic companies as an investor, advisor, board member and clinical strategist. His experience includes Encore Vision, which was acquired by Novartis, as well as Allysta Therapeutics, Premark Pharma and BlinkCNS. He serves as Chief Medical Officer and a board member of MCAL Therapeutics, which is developing a novel synthetic lipid technology for dry eye disease and other ocular indications.
Dr. Mather co-founded OphthaFund to bring experienced ophthalmic judgment to the evaluation of emerging technologies in eye care. His clinical experience informs his perspective on unmet need and physician adoption, while longstanding relationships across clinical, entrepreneurial and investment communities contribute to the fund’s relationship-driven approach.
Earlier in his career he co-founded Physicians Eye Surgery Center, later acquired by US Eye. He trained in ophthalmology at the Medical University of South Carolina and completed an oculoplastic surgery fellowship at the University of Arizona.
Andrea H. Marshall, JD

Andrea H. Marshall, JD, is an experienced investor, attorney and business executive who co-founded OphthaFund. She currently serves as a Trustee of the South Carolina Research Authority. She previously served for 16 years as a director of its affiliate SC Launch, including two years as Chair, and led Charleston Angel Partners, overseeing the screening, diligence and negotiation of early-stage technology investments.
Her healthcare and life sciences experience includes serving as founding Innovation Director of the Roper St. Francis Research and Innovation Center, advancing early-stage inventions. In 2025, as General Counsel, she guided the acquisition of MedTrust Holdings.
Ms. Marshall began her legal career with Holland & Knight in New York, practicing corporate law, securities, and mergers and acquisitions. Her investment, legal, operating and healthcare experience informs the evaluation and growth of emerging companies. She earned her JD with honors from the University of Texas School of Law and a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University.
George Magrath, MD, MBA, MS

George Magrath, MD, MBA, MS, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and biotechnology executive with experience in company leadership, ophthalmic drug development, finance and investing. He serves as Chief Executive Officer and a board member of Opus Genetics. Ocuphire Pharma acquired Opus Genetics; the combined public company trades on Nasdaq. Previously, Dr. Magrath was Chief Executive Officer of Lexitas Pharma Services, an ophthalmology-focused contract research organization, where he expanded its capabilities in retinal disease services and ophthalmic image reading before its acquisition by a private equity firm. He also served as Medical Director at Hovione, working across ophthalmology, dermatology and respiratory programs. Earlier he was an equity analyst at Edison Investment Research covering pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. His clinical, operating, public-company and financial experience informs OphthaFund’s evaluation of emerging ophthalmic companies. He earned his medical degree and completed ophthalmology residency at the Medical University of South Carolina, holds an MBA from The Citadel and a Master of Science in Applied Economics from Johns Hopkins University.
